Knowledge

Zürich is a knowledge hub and has much to offer in the education sector: standard features of the system are state schools that provide high quality education, a wide choice of international schools, work experience opportunities and constant knowledge transfer between industry and education. So there is no wonder that a considerable number Nobel Laureats have their roots in Zürich.

Zurich the scientific capital of Switzerland

Zurich has an excellent worldwide reputation in the fields of education, research and development. The Canton of Zurich is Switzerland’s educational capital being the home of the Federal Institute of Technology ETH, the University of Zurich, and eight Universities of Applied Sciences. The local workforce is highly qualified.

Education is a high priority in Switzerland, with investment in the field of education second only to that of the USA. The 2001 - 2002 Global Competitiveness Report ranked the quality of education at state schools as excellent placing them first in world. In the same study recognized business schools were similarly attested as offering a high standard of education (ranked third after the USA and France).

Universities in Zurich

The University of Zurich and the Federal Institute of Technology ETH are not only renowned in Switzerland, they belong to the elite of the world’s universities. With respect to the publicity it enjoys, the ETH can probably only be compared to the MIT. Its success in the field of Natural Sciences speaks for itself: The Science Citation Index that assesses the significance and caliber of basic research worldwide has awarded top marks to Zurich’s research centers. In the international ranking, second and third places were allotted to the fields of Immunology, Biology and Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Chemistry, Physics or Ecology and Environmental Studies. Other significant sectors are the fields of brain research and anthropology and work at the University Hospital and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

Science City - The Future

To maintain its position as a leading educational institute the ETH is building the ETH Science City. Future generations of leading scientists will live, work and carry on research in these new surroundings.

Universities of Applied Sciences in Zurich

Besides universities that pursue cutting edge research, the Universities of Applied Sciences have an increasing role to play in modern education: They are traditionally linked with the private sector of industry and offer practical study courses and demanding postgraduate programs.

In total, with the University of Zurich, the ETH Zurich and the Universities of Applied Sciences over one-third of Switzerland's graduates receive their education in Zurich.

Private Research

Private research is a further factor contributing to Zurich’s position as one of the world’s best research centers. Both the IBM Research Center in Rüschlikon and Sulzer Innotec operate at the cutting edge of research. Private research institutes in particular are in an excellent position to transfer research results to products for the private market.

International Schools

In Zurich there are also several English-language international schools with correspondingly international curricula; there is also one French and one Japanese school.
